Which pool robot do you need? Not all pool robots clean the same thing

From floating leaves to debris on the floor: find the kind of robot that fits your pool.

Does your pool fill with leaves, collect sand on the floor or develop dirt on the walls? They may all be sold as robotic pool cleaners, but they do not all do the same job.

The good news is that you do not need the most expensive machine. You need to identify where the dirt collects and choose a robot built for that job.

1. Is your pool under a tree and always full of leaves?

What you need: a surface skimmer robot.

Leaves, insects and floating debris can be collected before they sink. An automatic skimmer moves across the surface and gathers them in a basket.

Lifestyle S001A Solar Pool Skimmer

  • Solar power with a rechargeable battery, according to the seller.
  • App control.
  • Designed to collect floating debris.

Note: It does not vacuum the floor or clean walls. If your pool stays in shade most of the time, check how it recharges and how long it can run on battery.

2. Does your pool collect sand, dirt or small debris on the floor?

What you need: a floor-cleaning robot.

If the walls usually stay clean, you may not need to pay for a model that climbs them.

3. Is your pool larger or does it have an irregularly shaped floor?

What you need: longer runtime and planned navigation.

For a pool with curves or a larger floor area, look for a robot that plans its route instead of relying only on less systematic movement.

4. Do your pool walls get dirty too?

What you need: a robot that can climb walls.

Stuck-on dust, dirt and some deposits do not disappear by simply vacuuming the floor. This is where brushes and vertical movement matter.

5. Do you want one robot to clean nearly the whole pool?

What you need: a broad-coverage model.

If you have a large pool with ledges, walls and floating debris, there are advanced machines that combine several tasks.

Before you buy, remember these four things

  • Surface is not the same as the floor. A skimmer collects floating leaves; a floor cleaner collects sunken debris.
  • Square footage matters. Check floor area, depth and runtime, not only the outside dimensions.
  • Walls and steps are a different challenge. A cordless robot or one with strong suction is not automatically able to climb them.
  • Check shipping to your country. Price, warehouse, taxes and availability can change by location.

Our recommendation

Start with the problem that costs you the most time. If it is leaves, look for a skimmer. If it is sand, a floor cleaner may be enough. If you need to clean walls, choose one that can climb them.

If your pool collects dirt both on the surface and below, remember that two specialized robots can also be a practical alternative to an all-in-one machine.
